BASF と出光、日本における1,4
ブタンジオール事業を再編
BASF （本社：ドイツ
ルートヴィッヒスハーフェン）は、2003 年7 月1
日付けで出光石油化学株式会社（本社：東京都墨田区）との合弁会社である出光BASF
株式会社（本社：東京都港区;IBC ）の持株比率を50%から67%に引き上げ、社名をBASF
出光株式会社（BIC ）へと変更します。
BIC は、今後も年間生産能力25,000 トンの1,4
ブタンジオール（BDO ）プラントでの生産を継続します。このプラントは、千葉県市原市にある出光石油化学のコンビナート内で操業中です。この千葉の石油化学コンビナートは東京湾に面しており、日本でも最大規模で最も競争力のある生産拠点のひとつです。
同じく7月1日付けで、日本におけるＩＢＣ とBASF
グループが行ってきたBDO 事業は、BIC に一本化されます。BIC
の生産能力を超える需要に対しては、他のアジア地域、欧州ならびに米国にあるBASF
のBDO 生産拠点より供給します。BASF
は、世界有数のBDO
メーカーであり、グループ全体の年間総生産能力はBDO
換算で57.5 万トンになります。
「今回のＢＩＣ
の再編を通じて、日本という重要なBDO
市場におけるBASF の地位を大幅に強化することができます」とBASF
の中間物担当プレジデント、ヴァルター・グラムリッヒは説明しています。また、出光石油化学の厩橋輝男社長は、「この重要な中間体化学品をBIC
の日本のお客さまに確実かつ安定して供給できるようBASF
との提携関係を継続することができ嬉しく思います」と述べています。BDO
は、エンジニアリング・プラスチック、ポリウレタン、弾性繊維の原料に使用されています。

東燃化学、無水マレイン酸、１・４ＢＤから撤退
東燃化学が川崎工場の無水マレイン酸、１・４ブタンジオール（１・４ＢＤ）の統合プラントを６月末で操業停止し、両事業から撤退することが明らかとなった。すでにユーザーへは説明を行っている。無水マレイン酸事業は主用途の不飽和ポリエステル市場の低迷が続いて収益性が低下している。１・４ＢＤはＰＢＴ（ポリブチレンテレフタレート）向け需要の伸びが見込まれるものの、同社の生産規模では競争力に劣っていた。さらに、昨年秋からプラントトラブルが続いており、安定操業に不安を抱えていたことも理由とみられる。同社は事業構造の再構築を推進しており、２月にはポリフェニレンサルファイド（ＰＰＳ）樹脂事業売却を発表している。

三菱化学、アジアでも１・４ＢＤ−ＰＢＴ統合プラント
三菱化学はアジアで１・４−ブタンジオール（１・４ＢＤ）−ＰＢＴ（ポリブチレンテレフタレート）統合プラント構想を推進する。２００４−５年をめどにＰＴＭＧ（ポリテトラメチレンエーテルグリコール）を含めた大型連続重合設備を建設するもので、シンガポールなどが有力。提携も含め企業化調査に着手し、２００２−３年にも決定する。
同社は四日市事業所で統合プラント整備を進めており、２００２年の１・４ＢＤ、ＰＢＴ増設で国内市場への対応は完成する。需要増が見込まれるアジアで引き続き統合プラント建設を目指す。
BASF Announces Plans for North
American Butanediol Plant
BASF Corporation has announced plans to build a new butanediol
(BDO) plant in North America using the ester hydrogenation
technology acquired in May
1998 from Kvaerner Process Technology, London. The new plant, to
be built at BASF's Geismar, La. site, will have a capacity of 100,000 metric
tons (220 million pounds) and
use butane as
the raw material. Start up is
slated for 2003.
With the acquisition of Kvaerner's technology, BASF has access to
three major technologies for producing butanediol. As the leading
global supplier of butanediol, with a current capacity of
310,000 metric tons (680
million pounds) per year, BASF is continuing its expansion plans
in strategic markets and employing the most efficient
technologies based on the location of its facilities.
BASF currently uses the acetylene process at its existing BDO plant in Geismar, as
well as in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Chiba, Japan. To further
strengthen the competitiveness of the Geismar plant, a new
acetylene facility based on BASF's improved POX (partial oxidation)
technology is currently under
construction at the site, scheduled for start up in the fourth
quarter of 1999. The start up of another butanediol plant in
Ulsan, Korea, is scheduled later this year employing the MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals
Corporation, Tokyo) process
based on butadiene.
In addition, the company recently announced plans to build a 100,000-metric-ton
butanediol plant in Malaysia
with its joint venture, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas). The
plant will be completed in 2002 and also use butane as a
feedstock.
"North America is a key market for BASF's butanediol and
derivatives and we intend to support the growth of our customers
in this region," said Gerald Bendele, Group Vice President,
Chemical Intermediates, BASF Corporation. "The region is
also ideally suited to support the worldwide BASF network of
butanediol facilities, based on our raw material position here
and favorable logistics capabilities."
Butanediol and its derivatives, polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF®), N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and
polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), are used to produce polyurethanes and
engineering plastics, such as polybutylene terephthalate (PBT),
as well as fibers, plant protection products, pharmaceuticals,
cosmetics, coatings for floor coverings, roller-skate wheels and
roofing materials. Other applications for these versatile
products include specialty solvents that are used in computer
chip and paper production, plastics recycling, industrial
cleaning and as paint strippers.
