Sumitomo to take $100 mln stake in Molycorp

* To buy $100 mln of common stock, provide $30 mln loan
* Sumitomo secures seven years of rare earth
* Molycorp shares up 3 pct in pre-market trading

Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp agreed to invest $130 million in U.S. rare-earth producer Molycorp Inc in exchange for a guaranteed seven-year supply of the minerals, which are used in products ranging from wind turbines to MP3 players.

Molycorp said Sumitomo agreed to buy $100 million of its common stock and provide $30 million in debt financing, to help fund its redevelopment of its Mountain Pass, California, mine and processing facility.

The news sent Molycorp shares up 3 percent to $31.70 in premarket trading. The company has a $2.55 billion market capitalization.

Molycorp, which went public in July at $14 per share, has seen its shares more than double in value since China slashed its export quotas on rare-earth elements.

"This financing will help to ensure that Molycorp will deploy its entire mine-to-magnets manufacturing supply chain on time and on budget," said Mark Smith, Molycorp chief executive officer. The company expects to spend about $500 million updating its mine, which was closed in 2002, at a time when rare earth prices were falling.

Japanese companies have been moving in recent months to secure reliable supplies of rare earths. Last month, Sojitz Corp reached a procurement deal with Australian miner Lynas Corp.

Sumitomo plans to import nearly 2,000 tons of rare earths next year including both new output and inventoried stock with shipments expected to grow to 3,000 tonnes in 2012 about 10% of current Japanese demand. It laso plans to import cerium, lanthanum and neodymium among other rare earths from Molycorp.

レ アアース（希土類）生産を手がける資源会社、米モリコープは10日、住友商事の出資を受け入れると正式発表した。住商は１億ドル（約80億円）を投じてモ リコープ株を取得するほか、3000万ドル（約25億円）をモリコープに融資する。モリコープから2017年まで希土類の供給を受ける長期契約も結ぶ。

　住商は13日に発表する。現在のモリコープの時価総額から試算すると、住商の出資比率は３％前後となる見通し。来年２月に払い込みを終え、希土類供給の正式契約を結ぶ。

　モリコープは保有するマウンテン・パス鉱山（カリフォルニア州）の生産を年内にも一部再開し、12年には約２万トンを生産する計画。住商から得た資金を本格生産に向けた投資などに役立てる。

　長期契約はガラス研磨材やモーターに利用する希土類であるセリウム、ランタン、ネオジムなどを供給するという内容。住商は調達した希土類を 国内メーカーに販売する。11〜12年は少なくとも年2750トン、13年以降は年3250トンを供給する計画だ。日本メーカーが一般に利用する仕様にす るには加工が必要で、日本仕様のベースでは供給数量は当初、年約1700トンとなる。

　住商は今回の出資にあたり、石油天然ガス・金属鉱物資源機構（ＪＯＧＭＥＣ）に資金面での支援を要請する方針だ。
