The 3rd Coal to Olefins Conference will be held in Beijing in Mid Nov. 2011

In 2010, China imported 7.36 Mt of PE and 3.87 Mt of PP, according to the data from China Customs, and the ethylene and propylene monomer imports were 820 kt and 1.52 Mt respectively.
There is huge gap between olefins supply and demand. With the proven technology, coal-to-olefins becomes the most competitive direction of modern coal chemical.

2011 is first year of coal to olefins commercialization in China. Shenhua Baotou Coal-to-Polyolefin plant has started commercial operation since Jan.1 2011, and shows good profitability; Shenhua Ningmei Coal-to-PP plant has produced on-spec products and supplied to the market since Q2 2011; Datang Duolun Coal-to-PP plant is expected to start up this year. Under the current prices of oil and coal, the coal-to-olefins is very competitive. According to the requirements of authorities, in the next stage, the Coal to Olefins industry will upgrade the demonstration, including reasonable industrial planning, improving water consumption and reducing energy consumption, as well as optimizing waste treatment.

The technology innovation changes the industry. Several energy & chemical giants initiated the strategy of raw materials diversification. There are more than 20 Coal (or methanol)-to-olefins projects are being carrying out preliminary work or under construction. Total and China Power Investment Corporation signed an agreement to set up a joint venture in Ordos, Inner Mongolia for a world-scale coal-to-polyolefins project. Shenhua and Dow have completed a feasibility study for their jv of coal to olefins complex in Yulin, Shaanxi. Meanwhile, based on the situation of methanol overcapacity, in coastal areas of China, investors like Ningbo Heyuan and Jiangsu Shenghong also have launched the methanol to olefins projects by outsourcing methanol as feedstock.

With the strategic cooperation of Total Petrochemicals, ASIACHEM will organize the 3rd COAL-TO-OLEFINS CONFERENCE in Nov.14-15 2011 in Beijing. The conference will explore the development of olefins and diversification trend of petrochemical raw materials, coal to olefins policies and industry planning, updates of large-scale coal-to-olefins projects, complement and competitiveness between coal to olefins and naphtha cracking, China's coal to olefins commercial demonstration projects operating data and summary, Coal Chemical Industry Park Development and utilization of coal-to-olefins by-products, commercial coal to olefins plant upgrade and optimization, out-purchasing methanol and building MTO projects in the coastal chemical parks and its downstream industry planning.

MIIT: Chinafs Propylene Consumption will Reach 28 Mt by 2015

In Feb. 2012, on the official website, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released gThe Olefin Industry 12th Five Year Planningh, which planned that: during 2011-2015, the solid target is the diversification of olefin feedstock. The target includes: By 2015, China's ethylene capacity to reach 27 Mt/a and propylene capacity to reach 24 Mt/a, and the rate of olefin feedstock diversification over 20%.

The planning estimated that by 2015 Chinafs ethylene production will reach 24.3 Mt and equivalent consumption will reach 28 Mt.

The Governmental policies will encourage the import of condensates, light hydrocarbon and other resources, to optimize the structure of the olefin feedstock; based on the rich coal resources and self-developed technologies, to appropriately develop the coal to olefins; and maximized utilize the refinery by-product to produce olefins.

ASIACHEM estimated that, encouraged by policies and driven by market, in the coming years, China's propylene feedstock diversification will face the golden opportunities. The main applied technology will include propane dehydrogenation to propylene (PDH) and methanol to propylene (MTO/MTP); other propylene production enhancing technologies, such as olefin cracking (OCP) and the conversion of olefins (OCU), as well as the fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC) will also be well used.

Under this background, the g2012 Propylene Feedstock Diversification Conferenceh will be held in Shanghai in April. In the upcoming conference, the outlook of propylene industry in 2011-2015, the opportunities and challenges of propylene feedstock diversification, PDH & MTO/MTP projects update, propylene production enhancing technologies, technical and economic analysis of different routes will be focused.
