タイ国PTT社との化学事業コラボレーションについて

　宇部興産株式会社（社長：田村浩章）と、タイ国において天然ガス、石油精製、石油化学などの事業を展開するPTT Public Company Limited（社長：Prasert Bunsumpun。以下「PTT社」）とは、カプロラクタム、合成ゴムなど化学事業についてタイ国における共同事業化を検討することを決定、このほど両社間で覚書を締結しました。
　宇部興産は、1993−95年にカプロラクタム・ナイロン・合成ゴムの製造販売会社を設立、現在では宇部興産の化学事業にとって、重要な子会社群に成長しています。
　2005年にはR&Dセンターを設立、ナイロン・合成ゴムの開発業務も開始しました。また、ファインケミカル事業（1.6ヘキサンジオール）への投資についても積極的に検討しています。宇部興産にとってタイは、今後とも積極的な拡大投資を行っていく重要な戦略拠点です。
　
　PTT社は、1978年にタイ工業省傘下に設立された政府全額出資の国営企業を前身とし、2001年に上場、現在の社名となりました。タイにおける最大の民間会社であり、天然ガス・石油関連を主なビジネスとし、2007年の連結売上高は1.4兆バーツ（約5.7兆円）。天然ガス開発（PTT Exploration and Production Public Co., Ltd.）、芳香族系石油化学及び石油精製（PTT Aromatics and Refining Public Co., Ltd.）、オレフィン系石油化学（PTT Chemical Public Co., Ltd.）などの事業を、関連会社を通じて展開しています。

Ube to build specialty-chemical plant

Ube Group (Thailand) is investing Bt1.8 billion to set up the world's second-largest plant for the specialty chemical 1,6-Hexanediol, in a bid to create highvalue products from its caprolactam production waste and meet demand from the automotive industry by 2011.

The plant, to be located in Rayong province, will have an annual production capacity of 6,000 tonnes.

"Our plant is scheduled to commence operation in the first quarter of 2011. By that time, we expect the automotive industry will have recovered from the economic downturn. We target to generate annual revenue of Bt1.3 billion from this plant," Ube Group (Thailand) president Charunya Phichitkul said yesterday.

There are only three companies making 1,6-Hexanediol: Japan's Ube Group and two German firms, BASF and Lanxess. BASF is the largest producer with an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, followed by Ube Group at 18,000 tonnes and Lanxess at 12,000 tonnes.

However, he said Ube Group (Thailand) would review a planned expansion of its caprolactam plant, which is scheduled to begin operation next year. "Demand for caprolactam has dropped drastically since the fourth quarter of last year. Hence, we needed to postpone and review the project to make it in line with the economic situation," Charunya said.

It had planned to boost its annual capacity for caprolactam, an organic compound used for making nylon, from 110,000 tonnes to 130,000 tonnes at an estimated cost of Bt800 million.

He said it projected a 10-per-cent drop in revenue this year to nearly Bt20 billion, due mainly to a considerable drop in petrochemical prices in line with oil prices. Caprolactam is currently quoted at US$1,650-$1,700 (Bt56,250-Bt58,040) per tonne, down from its peak of $2,000 last year.

However, Charunya said the Thai unit's operation results would be boosted by new production capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year from its engineering nylon plant, which will commence operation in October.

The company yesterday signed a letter of intent with ToyoThai Corp, which is a contractor for the 1,6Hexanediol plant. ToyoThai won four new contracts worth Bt3 billion in total, which boosted the value of its backlog projects to Bt9.3 billion. It will start to recognise revenue in the second half of this year.

It also plans to list in the Stock Exchange of Thailand next month in a bid to increase its capacity for undertaking worldscale projects worth $300 million-$500 million each.
