BASF a step closer to building the world's largest PolyTHF/THF plant

BASF today announced that the Shanghai Administration for Industry & Commerce (a Chinese government agency) has issued a business license enabling BASF Chemicals Company Limited (BACH) to be established. BACH will build the world's largest integrated production facility for polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF®) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Caojing/Shanghai, China.

BACH - a wholly owned subsidiary of BASF - will cater to the emerging customer needs for PolyTHF/THF in China and the Asia Pacific region with an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tons of PolyTHF and 80,000 metric tons of THF. The worldwide demand for PolyTHF in 2002 is estimated to be over 200,000 metric tons, with the market expected to grow annually by between five and ten percent. The integrated production facility is scheduled to come on stream in 2004.

The plants will utilize BASF's newly developed proprietary technology to convert butane directly to THF and subsequently to PolyTHF. This innovative technology, which eliminates the intermediate step of producing 1,4-butanediol (BDO), makes manufacturing more efficient and ensures BASF's cost leadership. BASF announced its plan to build this production facility in April 2002.

BASF lays cornerstone for the worlds largest PolyTHF® facility in Shanghai

First plant to utilize new innovative technology to produce THF and PolyTHFR
BASF launches Chinese brand name to cater to the rapidly growing local textile industry

BASF today laid the cornerstone of its new integrated production facility for polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF®) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park (SCIP) in Caojing/Shanghai, China. Themed "Stretch to New Heights," the event celebrated a range of superlatives: With an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tons of PolyTHF® and 80,000 metric tons of THF, the project will be the largest PolyTHF® production facility worldwide. It also is BASF's first investment project in China that is wholly-owned right from its inception. And it will be the first facility worldwide to utilize a new proprietary technology developed by BASF that will ensure the company cost leadership in the production of THF and PolyTHF®.

The new plants, scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2004, will supply to rapidly expanding spandex fibers market in China. At the event, Dr. Andreas Kreimeyer, member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF with responsibility for Asia Pacific, reconfirmed the company's commitment to China: "By 2010, we aim to generate 20 percent of BASF's sales and earnings in the chemical business in Asia Pacific with 70 percent of those coming from local production. Our new THF/PolyTHF® facility in Caojing marks an important step in achieving these goals."

To highlight the product's advantages to local customers, BASF today launched a Chinese brand name for PolyTHF®: Bao Li Fu, which means "enrich your fabric." Dr. Walter Gramlich, President of BASF's Operating Division Intermediates, said: "BASF aims to be the preferred supplier of spandex raw materials for the rapidly growing Chinese market. This is why we decided to build this state-of-the art plant in this attractive market. Our innovative technology reduces the capital investment for the manufacture of THF and PolyTHF® and also decreases the cost of raw materials."

The production facility in Caojing is the first plant to utilize BASF's newly developed proprietary technology to convert butane directly to THF and subsequently to PolyTHF®. This technology, which eliminates the intermediate step of producing 1,4-butanediol (BDO), makes manufacturing more efficient and ensures BASF's cost leadership. Compared to the conventional process, the new technology also uses less energy, thus making a contribution to sustainable development.

PolyTHF® is an important component in the manufacture of elastic spandex fibers, which are widely used for textile applications like sportswear, swimwear, inner and outer wear. PolyTHF® is also important as an intermediate for thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) used for hoses, films and cable sheathing. Further applications are thermoplastic polyetheresters or polyetheramides and cast elastomers, which are used, for example in the manufacturing of wheels for skateboards and inline skates.

THF is precursor for PolyTHF® and is also used as a specialty solvent, for example in the pharmaceutical production.

In Asia, BASF also has production facilities for THF and PolyTHF® in Yokkaichi, Japan and Ulsan, Korea. BASF also produces THF and PolyTHF® in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and in Geismar, Louisiana.

BASF PolyTHF plant in Caojing (Shanghai) comes on stream
http://www.corporate.basf.com/en/presse/mitteilungen/pm.htm?pmid=1761&id=Zffgj6W2Vbcp*Hh

The worlds largest PolyTHF plant now in operation in China
Proximity to customers and delivery reliability improved
First use of innovative BASF technology for THF
Global production Verbund strengthened

After less than two years of construction, BASF has started up its new PolyTHFR (polytetrahydrofuran) plant at the integrated production site at the Shanghai Chemical Industrial Park (SCIP) in Caojing, Shanghai. By the middle of 2005, BASF will also gradually start up its neighboring THF (tetrahydrofuran) plant. With an annual capacity of 60,000 metric tons of Poly THF and 80,000 metric tons of THF, this is the largest PolyTHF production facility in the world. This is also the first investment project in China that has been wholly owned by BASF right from its inception.

The facilities in Caojing represent a further step in meeting the BASF Group
s objective of achieving 20 percent of its sales and earnings in the chemical business in Asia Pacific by 2010, with 70 percent coming from local production.

A new proprietary technology for THF production is being used for the first time by BASF in Caojing. In this process, butane - obtained from widely available natural gas - is used as a raw material for manufacturing THF, which is then used to produce PolyTHF. The innovative process eliminates the intermediate step of 1,4-butanediol (BDO), which was previously necessary.

Our innovative production technology is less complex and thus enhances our competitiveness as one of the worlds leading producers of THF and PolyTHF,said Dr. Walter Gramlich, head of BASFs Intermediates division.

Objective: To be leading supplier of spandex fibers raw materials in China

With the new plants, BASF will primarily supply Chinese textile fibers manufacturers. PolyTHF is an important component in the production of elastic spandex fibers for sportswear, swimsuits, underwear and outerwear fabrics. In China, PolyTHF will be marketed under the brand name Bao Li Fu, which means
Enrich your fabric.

The new production plant is designed to make us the leading supplier of spandex raw materials in the rapidly growing Chinese market, said Gramlich. Our close proximity allows us to serve our customers with additional flexibility, speed and increased delivery reliability.

In addition to its role in textiles, PolyTHF is also an important intermediate for thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), which are used for example in the manufacture of highly abrasion-resistant, yet flexible hoses, films and cable sheathing. Other TPU applications include thermoplastic polyetheresters and polyetheramides or cast elastomers required for the production of wheels for skateboards and inline skates. THF is a precursor of PolyTHF, but is also used as a special solvent, for example, in the production of pharmaceuticals.

Worldwide production network close to customers

The new facilities supplement BASF's network of THF and PolyTHF production sites around the world. In Asia, this includes the Yokkaichi site in Japan and the Ulsan complex in South Korea. In addition, BASF manufactures both products in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Geismar, Louisiana, in the United States. BASF has total THF and PolyTHF capacities of 230,000 and 200,000 metric tons per year, respectively.

BASF
s Intermediates division develops, produces and markets the world's largest range of intermediates. The most important of the division's more than 600 products include amines, diols, polyalcohols and acids. Among other applications, intermediates are used as starting materials for, coatings, plastics, pharmaceuticals, textile fibers, detergents and crop protectants. The division has access to plants at 15 production sites in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In 2004, the Intermediates division had 2,850 employees and generated worldwide sales of ?2 billion (2003: ?1.8 billion). For more information, go to www.basf.de/intermediates.

保土谷化学、内外でPTG(PTMG)能力を増強、04年に台湾の3万t稼働へ

 保土谷化学工業はPTG(ポリテトラメチレンエーテルグリコール)の供給能力を増強する。

BASF to Restart Mothballed THF Plant in China

BASF says it will restart a mothballed tetrahydrofuran (THF) plant at Caojing, China, near Shanghai, at the end of 2009 or in early 2010.
The 80,000-m.t./year plant started operating in 2005, based on a novel,
butane-based production process. The technology encountered problems, however, causing BASF to mothball the plant earlier this year and include a one-off, E200-million Ebit charge in its accounts.

The plant has since been re-equipped with a "new production unit enabling the alternative use of butanediol as a raw material for THF production in addition to butane," BASF says. The new unit is based on BASF's existing technology, which can alternatively produce maleic anhydride.
The THF plant will supply an adjacent polyTHF unit that BASF has operated at Caojing since 2005. The polyTHF plant has until now obtained THF from alternative BASF sources. BASF produces THF at Ludwigshafen; Geismar, LA; and Ulsan, Korea.
Separately, BASF says it has inaugurated a customer center for automotive technology in the Pudong area of Shanghai. "BASF chemists and engineers will optimize and develop new applications in close cooperation with customers as well as offer training programs in process technology" at the center, BASF says.

October 11, 2007 M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX

BASF AG: BASF THF plant in Caojing ready for restart

The mothballed BASF plant for the manufacture of tetrahydrofuran (THF) at the Caojing site near Shanghai, China, is ready to go back on stream. The plant is now equipped with a new production unit enabling the
alternative use of butane diol (BDO) as a raw material for THF production in addition to butane. Among others, THF is used as a raw material to produce PolyTHF. With the move, the company sustainably improves the reliability of local industrial raw material supply for the neighboring PolyTHF plant, which has been in operation since the first quarter of 2005.

Additionally, the production of
maleic anhydride (MAN) as a commercial product alongside THF will be possible, presumably with effect from early 2010.

With the move, the company sustainably improves the reliability of local industrial raw material supply for the neighboring PolyTHF plant, which has been in operation since the first quarter of 2005. Additionally, the production of maleic anhydride (MAN) as a commercial product alongside THF will be possible, presumably with effect from early 2010.

"The new production unit improves our flexibility in three respects, said Dr. Walter Gramlich, president, head of the Operating Division Intermediates of the BASF-Group, and continued: First, we can extract MSA as a market product starting in 2009/2010 and thus develop new growth markets in China. Second, we can also choose the most favorable raw material and so improve our competitiveness. And third, our new flexibility on the raw material side considerably increases the security of supply for our PolyTHF customers." Gramlich emphasizes: "Our local PolyTHF production in Shanghai has established us as a reliable partner for our PolyTHF customers in China and Asia. We are now engaged in cooperations with leading producers of Spandex fibers who know they can rely on our highly valuable product complete with a full range of technical services. In response to continuously growing customer demand, we are presently exploring potentials for further expansion of our PolyTHF capacity in Asia Pacific." BASF has a global Verbund network of production plants for THF and PolyTHF located close to the customers. These are the Asian sites in Ulsan (Korea) and Caojing (China) as well as Ludwigshafen (Germany) und Geismar, Louisiana (USA).

PolyTHF is used in the production of elastic spandex fibers for textiles such as sportswear, swimwear, underwear and outerwear. THF not only serves as a precursor of PolyTHF, but is also used as a special solvent, for example, in the production of pharmaceutical products.

MAN serves mainly as a building block to produce unsaturated polyester resins. These resins are widely used in the form of composite materials, above all in the shipbuilding, construction and automobile industries. Parts made of these resins stand out for their high strength and particularly light weight. Maleic anhydride is used for many other applications, too, and notably for producing water-soluble polymers and lubricants.
