In
1952, INEOS Phenol was founded under the name Phenolchemie as a joint
venture of various industrial partners in Gladbeck, Germany,
with the specific purpose to manufacture phenol and
acetone from cumene. Two years later, production
started with an annual capacity of 8000 tons of phenol.
Degussa
AG, Duesseldorf, has sold its Phenolchemie subsidiary to the
INEOS Group, United Kingdom, for DM 825 million (E 422
million).

INEOS Phenol confirms
Chinese Government authorities re-approve investment plans for a
400 kte facility
INEOS Phenol has today
confirmed that the National Development and Reform Committee
(NDRC) of the People’s Republic of China have
re-approved its planned investment for a 400kte Phenol
facility in Zhangjiagang. (and 250kte acetone)
The request for re-approval was made by INEOS following the
completion of front-end engineering, initial project financing
discussions and a review of recent economic developments.
“We
are pleased with the confidence shown by China’s Governmental authorities in
INEOS' technology, business plan, and reputation”, said Leen Heemskerk, CEO of
INEOS Phenol. “The re-approval supports our
effort to be a major producer in the Asian market and confirms
that the Chinese market is supportive of phenol/acetone
manufacturing facility of this capacity and scale.”
“I am very
appreciative of the strong support from the Zhangjiagang
government and the Zhangjiagang Free Trade Zone in their
continued effort to development this investment option"
As previously announced, INEOS Phenol is focused on strengthening
their China investment by seeking stronger raw material
integration and potential Chinese partnerships. INEOS Phenol is
the world's largest producer of Phenol and Acetone.
INEOS Phenol, currently
has a nameplate capacity of 1,870 ktpa of phenol and 1,150
ktpa of acetone a
year. It has a turnover of around Euro2.7 billion and employs 600
people worldwide. The company is the world's largest producer of
Phenol and Acetone and the only manufacturer with production
facilities both in Europe and America .
It is expected that production from the Zhangjiagang facility
will serve the growing market for phenol and acetone in China and
will free capacity at the company’s European and US plants to meet
growth in these regions. The completion of this new plant in
China will increase INEOS Phenol’s overall annual capacity to over
2.3 million tonnes of phenol and 1.4 million tonnes of acetone.
Phenol and Acetone are used in the production of polycarbonate,
plastics, phenolic resins, synthetic fibres (such as nylon) and
solvents. These products are used in a diverse range of
endmarkets, including the automotive, construction, electronics
and fibre industries.
INEOS is the world’s third largest chemicals company;
a leading manufacturer of petrochemicals, specialty chemicals and
oil products. Comprising 17 businesses, with a production network
spanning 64 manufacturing facilities in 14 countries, the company
produces more than 30 million tonnes of petrochemicals, 20
million tons per annum of crude oil refined products (fuels).
INEOS employs 15,500 people and has sales of around $47bn.
Following
approval by the National Development and Reform Commission
(China), the Ministry of Commerce and the Zhangjiagang
Administration of Industry and Commerce, INEOS Phenol has
announced its intention to invest in a 400 000 t/a phenol
plant in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, eastern China. The
new facility, which will also produce 250 000 tons of acetone
per year, will be solely owned by INEOS and is expected to be
completed at the end of 2009.

Ineos
INEOS
and Sinopec negotiate JV to build and operate a 400,000 tonne
phenol plant in Jiangsu.
INEOS
Phenol and Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical Company have signed a
Letter of Intent to study and negotiate a joint venture to build
and operate a phenol/acetone manufacturing site at the Nanjing
Chemical Industrial Park in Jiangsu Province, China.
The expected annual capacity of the new facility will be 400,000 tons of
phenol and 250,000 tons of acetone making it the largest plant of
its kind in China. The facility will also include 550,000 ton/year
of cumene capacity.
The location of the plant in Nanjing places it at the center of
China's strongest market for both phenol and acetone. It is
currently expected that the project will be completed in 2013.
China is the world's fastest growing market for phenol and
acetone and Sinopec is China's leading producer of phenol and
acetone with two production sites in Shanghai and Beijing and a
third under construction in Tianjin. INEOS Phenol currently has
manufacturing sites in Germany, Belgium, and USA (Alabama).
Following the completion of this project INEOS Phenol will
further strengthen its leading position and will be the only
company to have global manufacturing capability, with phenol and
acetone production in Europe, the USA, and Asia.
Leen Heemskerk, CEO of INEOS Phenol stated, "Building
manufacturing capability in the world's fastest growing market is
strategically important for INEOS Phenol. The partnership of
Sinopec YPC, INEOS Phenol and the Nanjing Chemical Industry Park
combines superior technology, full feedstock and supply chain
integration, and strong operating cultures. We look forward to
developing this investment which will provide competitive
products and integration investment opportunities to our
customers."
INEOS Phenol is the world's largest phenol and acetone producer
and Sinopec is China's largest refining and petrochemical
company.

Uncompetitive European energy and carbon costs force INEOS Phenol to
announce their intent to permanently close Gladbeck site in Germany
INEOS Phenol, the world's
largest producer of phenol and acetone, announced today its
intention to permanently stop
production at their site in Gladbeck, Germany. Sky
high European energy costs alongside Europe’s punitive CO2
tax policy have combined to leave Europe uncompetitive
against imported Chinese production and a global oversupply.
After carrying out a
detailed strategic review, the business intends to
permanently exit the Gladbeck site at a date to be
confirmed. Europe’s lack of competitiveness has already led
to the exit of several downstream consumers of phenol and
acetone to such an extent that local demand no longer
supports the operation of the Gladbeck site which dates from
1954 and requires significant future investment.
Commenting, Sir Jim
Ratcliffe, Chairman of INEOS said, “This is the
consequence of Europe’s total lack of energy competitiveness
and the blind devotion to carbon taxation which is leading
to a mass deindustrialisation across the continent. Gladbeck
is not the first and will definitely not be the last unless
the regulators wake up and take action”
INEOS Phenol will now
enter into consultation with the works council, employees,
customers and suppliers to exit the site in a safe,
responsible and compliant manner.
We remain committed to
the phenol business, to serve our customers around the
world.
Notes for Editors
The INEOS Phenol
plant at Gladbeck has the capacity to produce
650,000 tonnes of product
each year, making it one of the largest plants of its
kind in the world.
The site employs 279
people directly and indirectly supports over 1500 jobs.
The phenol and
acetone that the site produces goes into a wide variety
of uses
- Front and rear light clusters for cars
- Resins that are essential for printed circuit boards
and for the manufacture of wind turbine blades
- Resins for making automotive brake pads
- Solvents for use throughout manufacturing industry
