WACKER to further Expand Polysilicon Production Capacity
* New production plant with annual capacity of 10,000 metoric
tons at WACKER’s Nunchritz site
* Some 450 new jobs expected from Euro760 million investment
* Nominal annual-capacity target for Burghausen's expansion stage
8 currently under construction upped from7,000 to 10,000 metric
tons
* CEO Rudolf Staudigl: “We expect Crystalline Solar
Technology to show continued strong growth”
Wacker Chemie AG
plans to construct a new polysilicon production plant at its
Nunchritz site (Saxony, Germany) with a nominal annual capacity
of 10,000 metric tons.
WACKER in Nunchritz
At Nunchritz, WACKER SILICONES (a WACKER division) produces pyrogenic silica,
chlorosilanes, silicates, silicone fluids, silicone emulsions,
antifoam agents, siliconates and silicone rubber, as well as the
necessary precursors.
In the past 10 years, WACKER has invested more than Euro 550
million to transform this site into one of the world’s largest and most modern silicone
production complexes. The Munich-based chemical company currently
employs some 930 staff in Nunchritz.
WACKER and Dow Corning start raw material production at China’s largest integrated silicone site
Today, WACKER Chemie AG and Dow Corning Corporation officially started production in the first stage of their new pyrogenic silica and siloxane plants in Zhangjiagang (China). The new plants are key facilities of an integrated silicone manufacturing site developed by both companies to produce materials used extensively in industries including construction, beauty and personal care, power and automotives. Total investment from both companies for the site is estimated at approximately 1.2 billion U.S. dollars. Covering an area of 1 million square meters, the site located in the Jiangsu Yangtze River Chemical Industrial Park, Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu Province, is China’s largest facility of this kind and among the world’s largest and most advanced integrated production complexes for silicones.
The combined capacity for siloxane and pyrogenic silica is planned to be approximately 200,000 metric tons per year. It is expected that full operational capacity will be phased in by the end of 2010. Through their Zhangjiagang production complex,
The new upstream
production facilities are jointly operated by WACKER and Dow
Corning. At the site, both companies are also manufacturing
finished silicone products. These production plants are owned and operated
separately with
independent marketing and sales by Dow Corning and WACKER.
WACKER starts production at China´s largest dispersible polymer powder plant in Nanjing
Today, WACKER, the Munich-based chemical group, officially opened its new dispersible powder and vinyl acetate ethylene dispersion plant in Nanjing, China. With an annual capacity of 30,000 metric tons of dispersible powder, the Nanjing plant is the largest of its kind in China. The aim of this investment project is to secure sufficient long-term VINNAPAS® polymer-powder capacity and to guarantee Asia-Pacific customers consistently high delivery reliability and product quality in the future, too. WACKER ranks among the world’s largest producers of dispersible polymer powders for the construction industry.
Located in the Nanjing Chemical Industrial Park, the new WACKER Nanjing site covers an area of 100,000 square meters. First phase investment of this fully integrated world-class production complex which serves the entire product line from vinyl acetate ethylene dispersions to dispersible powders is over 50 million euros. WACKER already has a staff of nearly 100 employees at its Nanjing facility. Along with WACKER’s dryer plant in Burghausen, Germany, the Nanjing plant is the largest of its kind in the world.WACKER has been producing polymer powders and dispersions for the construction industry for more than 50 years. VINNAPAS® polymer powders are thermoplastic, plasticizer-free polymers derived primarily from vinyl acetate and ethylene. It was in 1957 that WACKER chemists first succeeded in industrially manufacturing the first powder binder as an additive for dry-mortar mixes. Today, WACKER POLYMERS is a global market and technology leader in the field of vinyl acetate-based copolymers and terpolymers.China’s growing demand for VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powders is chiefly due to the need for dependable, lightweight and energy-efficient building materials. Increasingly, Chinese houses are being lined with exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS). VINNAPAS® is a major component of the specialty mortars used in these systems. The dispersible polymer powder ensures that the individual layers which make up such systems are bonded together permanently.“A secure and high quality supply of polymer powders is essential for the further development of China’s fast growing construction industry and for China’s tremendous efforts to save energy”, explained Auguste Willems, Member of Wacker Chemie AG’s Executive Board. “This new site will not only provide a reliable supply chain backbone for WACKER POLYMERS in China over the next years with an increasingly competitive cost position and flexibility to better meet the local market demands. It will also enable us to provide our customers with first-class locally manufactured products and solutions, helping them to address the needs of their respective customers even better than in the past”, Willems said.In addition to EIFS, the dispersible polymer powders can be used in diverse building applications such as tile adhesives, self-leveling flooring compounds, plasters, repair mortars, water-proofing cementitious sealing slurries. They enhance important properties in the end product, such as adhesion, cohesion, flexibility and flexural strength. Water retention, processing properties and weatherability also benefit from VINNAPAS®. In China, from the Disney Land in Hong Kong to Baiyun Airport in Guangzhou, from the National Stadium in Beijing to Yincheng Dong Yuan Residential building in Nanjing, VINNAPAS® dispersible polymer powders are widely used in modern architectures.
WACKER Commissions Silicone Rubber Compounding Plant in India
The Munich-based chemical group WACKER has commissioned a compounding plant at its joint venture site Wacker Metroark Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. near Kolkata, India, today for the manufacture of ready-to-use silicone elastomers. The plant is designed for an annual production volume of several thousand metric tons and can be expanded in stages as demand requires. It is intended to supply India’s strongly growing economy with high-quality silicone com¬pounds faster and more flexibly. Several million euros are planned for investment in this plant.
“India is one of our fastest-growing sales markets,” says Dr. Bernd Pachaly, head of WACKER’s Engineering Silicones business unit. “The new SILMIX® facility is constructed according to WACKER standards and will produce silicone compounds for the Indian electronics, automotive and medium and high-voltage insulator market as well as for other industries.” During the start-up event in Kolkata, Pachaly’s deputy Dr. Johann Schuster pointed out that WACKER is one of the leading manufacturers of silicone elastomers for electric insulators. “By manufacturing such products locally, we can serve the market much more flexibly and significantly reduce lead times while still delivering the expected high product quality.” The SILMIX® plant has been designed so that production capacity can be adjusted to meet current market requirements in a short period of time. Schuster: “If necessary, we can respond very quickly to additional demand.” Soumitra Mukherjee, Managing Director of Wacker Metroark Chemicals (WMC), praised the investment as an important milestone for the joint venture. “WACKER and Metroark have been working together with great success for over a decade. With our range of high quality silicone products, we are already market leaders in many industries in India today.” Mukherjee pointed out that the plant includes a state-of-the-art lab for quality control. With its new compounding plant in Kolkata, WACKER is excellently positioned. “This way it is possible to test and develop high quality silicone compounds for the Indian market in India itself,” emphasized Mukherjee. “This is a major competitive advantage for our customers, who are often under great pressure to deliver quality on time.” For the manufacture of silicone compounds, the crosslinker, pigment and other additives are usually mixed into the rubber base. Blends such as these are used in a number of industries, including the automotive sector, the electrical industry and the heavy current industry.
