Headquartered in
Johannesburg, South Africa it is engaged in the commercial
production and marketing of chemicals and liquid fuels; with a
growing interest in oil and gas exploration.
Sasol was established in 1950 by the South African
government
to manufacture fuels and chemicals from indigenous raw materials.
The company has developed world-leading technology for the
commercial production of synthetic fuels and chemicals from low-grade coal as well as
the conversion of natural gas to environment-friendly fuels and
chemicals. It is committed to sustainable development and is a
signatory of Responsible Careョ, a worldwide initiative by the
chemical industry that strives to improve performance in safety,
health and environment.
A workforce of 30 000 strong deploy their skills and talents to
drive the company forward in exploration, mining, science,
technology R&D and business development. Sasol is listed on
the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE), symbol SOL and the
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), symbol SSL.
A family of diverse businesses with almost 50 entities in The
Americas, Australasia, Europe and Africa, subscribes to a code of
shared values that mould Sasol into one powerful global brand.
The Fischer-Tropsch processes, gasification
and allied petrochemical technologies typify Sasol's
innovative approach to products and processes. Sasol has developed two new-generation Fischer-Tropsch technologies with significant benefits. These are the high-temperature Sasol Advanced Synthol (SAS) process and the low-temperature Sasol Slurry Phase Distillate (SPD) process. Two sources of gas are utilised. Our separation technologies have enabled us to become an international marketer of 1-pentene, 1-hexene and 1-octene. These technologies have also generated a phenols and cresols business with excellent potential for growth, as well as production of mining chemicals, alcohols, and ketones.

commenced in Qatar. Sasol has been awarded a GTL project in
Nigeria. Gas rich regions such as Australasia, the Middle East
and the Caribbean are under review.
Sasol's entry into methane rich gas production and exploration
has expanded activity into southern and West Africa.
Through the Mozambique natural gas project in the Temane and
Pande gas fields, pipeline gas will be supplied to customers in
Mozambique and South Africa from 2004.
Sustainable development is key to our operations. We are
committed to Responsible Care, a worldwide initiative that
strives to improve performance in safety, health and environment.

http://www.sasol.com/sasol_internet/frontend/navigation.jsp?articleId=12200003&navid=4&rootid=4
Sasol
announced
today that it is considering the disposal of its
Olefins and Surfactants (O&S) business excluding its
co-monomers activities in South Africa.
Sasol acquired Condea in March 2001 from German-based RWE Dea for
euro1,3 billion. Most of this business was subsequently hosted in
Sasol O&S with production facilities mainly in the USA,
Europe and South Africa. A smaller part of the business was
hosted in Sasol Solvents which, together with the South
African-based solvents activities, forms a global solvents
business. The entire solvents business is being retained by
Sasol.
"Since the acquisition, substantial success has been
achieved in reducing costs and improving the productivity at
Sasol O&S. Pleasing progress has also been made in
strengthening relationships with key customers," says Sasol
deputy chief executive Trevor Munday.
"In 2003, Sasol determined that it would continue to grow
its chemical businesses conditional upon projects leveraging its
technology or securing integrated and highly cost-competitive
feedstock positions. The O&S business is only partially
integrated upstream into feedstocks and has not adequately
provided the integration benefits which Sasol requires,"
says Munday.
Sasol has embarked on an exciting international commercialisation
programme of its leading gas-to-liquid (GTL) fuels
technology and
possibly also at a later stage its coal-to-liquid
(CTL) technology.
"This is expected to require significant funding. The GTL
and CTL ventures will support or enhance traditionally high
margins achieved by Sasol as a consequence of its technology and
operating prowess," says Sasol chief executive Pat Davies.
"To optimally leverage both its talented people and
financial resources in the next few years, Sasol wishes to
establish the saleability of Sasol O&S at fair value,"
says Davies. "During this process, Sasol will remain
committed to the strategic and operational goals of Sasol O&S
and will continue to provide the business with the support
necessary to uphold its effectiveness and success," he says.
Deutsche Bank has been appointed to assist Sasol in procuring
offers, assessing the feasibility and attractiveness thereof and
executing any potential transaction.

Sasol builds new plant to
double Octene production
http://www.sasol.com/sasol_internet/frontend/navigation.jsp?articleTypeID=2&articleId=13400001&navid=1&rootid=1
Sasol today announced
that construction of a 100 000 tons per annum 1-Octene
plant in
Secunda in South Africa was underway. The facility is scheduled
to go into production during the second half of 2007 and will
double Sasol's existing 1-Octene output to 200 000 tons a
year.
Technology group Linde AG was awarded the “detail engineering, procurement
and construction” contract.
Sasol North America plans to build a new
low density polyethylene plant in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and will use
ExxonMobil Chemical's tubular process technology for its operations, the
companies said.
The 420,000 my/year plant is targeted for
completion in late 2016, according to the
statement.
Mike Biesheuvel, managing director for Sasol Polymers International Investments,
said past experience working with ExxonMobil and the company's track record with
similar-sized facilities were key factors in moving forward with another
partnership. The two companies worked together on an LDPE plant in Sasolburg,
South Africa.
"LDPE producers continue to choose our tubular process technology for its broad
grade-slate capabilities, high reactor uptime and lower total cost compared with
commercial gas-phase reactors," said Jennifer Dunphy, vice president, ExxonMobil
Chemical Technology Licensing.
Sasol is proposing the construction of an integrated GTL and ethane cracker adjacent to Westlake, Louisiana, near Lake Charles. This innovative complex will not only benefit our nation’s energy independence but will also be a tremendous economic stimulus to the region.

November 30, 2011
Sasol Announces Feasibility Study to Build an Ethylene Cracker Complex
South African energy and chemicals company Sasol today announced that it has approved a feasibility study for a world scale ethylene cracker and derivatives complex. The study is focused on opportunities at Sasol’s North America operating site in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Sasol CEO, David Constable, said the board’s approval of the study is an important next step in the growth of Sasol’s chemicals business.
“We believe strategic growth in chemicals will take full advantage of the natural gas opportunities along the US Gulf Coast and the anticipated growth will strengthen Sasol’s overall portfolio,” Constable said.
It is envisaged that the cracker will produce between 1 million and 1,4 million tons of ethylene per annum. Current estimates are that a cracker and derivatives complex, of this size, will cost between US$3,5 billion to US$4,5 billion.
The feasibility study is expected to be complete during the first half of 2013.
